CHILD-HEADED HOUSEHOLDS

We have succeeded in helping Kedibone and her two younger siblings, Kedibone* is 12 years old and looks after her two younger siblings instead of attending school. Their mother died from tuberculosis last year and their father disappeared years ago. Kedibone and her siblings scavenged the local rubbish dump for food and clothing until recently, when the Palabora Foundation came to their village and identified them as a child-headed household in need of financial and other help.

Kedibone’s two younger siblings had no birth certificates and therefore they were not entitled to receive a social grant. The Palabora Foundation organised help for Kedibone to register their births and to apply for the grants they needed. In the meantime they were taken to a drop-in centre that could provide them with food every day. The three children have been registered to start school again.

EARLY LEARNING CENTERS

Bongi* is three years old and loves anything with wheels. He has one small, metal car with rubber wheels, which he carries everywhere he goes. Bongi’s mother, Flora, works at a clothes shop in town and she drops Bongi off at one of the Palabora Foundation’s early learning centres on her way to work each morning. Flora used to leave Bongi with her grandmother, but a friend introduced her to the idea of a crèche.

Bongi benefits from having more educational toys, supplied by the Palabora Foundation’s visiting toy library. The staff at the crèche have had training in how to use the toys to teach young children basic skills such as sorting, naming colours, counting and other skills that will help them make the transition to Grade R. Bongi loves “school” and shows off his counting skills to his family whenever he gets the chance.

HIV AND AIDS

When Sophie* began to suspect that she had HIV, she avoided being tested because she knew she would be shunned by her community if they found out. When the ravages of her disease became apparent to her husband, he left her even though he was the most likely source of her HIV infection. Sophie died when she was only 36 years old, leaving behind four children with no one to care for them.Things have changed since Sophie first suspected she had HIV; the Palabora Foundation’s peer group educators have been visiting taverns, schools and churches in the area to teach the community about how HIV need not be a death sentence any more; that getting an HIV test can save your life; that knowing your status helps you protect your loved ones. The community’s views are changing, and so is their behaviour.

Sophie’s eldest daughter, Sewela*, became a peer group educator as Sophie’s illness progressed. Sewela is not infected with HIV and intends to stay that way by practising what she preaches. As a peer group educator she has attended regular workshops to learn about living with HIV and also how best to avoid both HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, which are also common in her community. She proudly wears her yellow t-shirt proclaiming, “I know my status” even when she is not officially on duty. Sheela hopes to train as a nurse when she is no longer supporting her younger siblings.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Thabang*, 20, is unemployed. He dreams of running his own company but has no idea how to go about it. Thabang wants to learn carpentry, as he already has some skill in the basics of making furniture. He hopes he can start a small business and marry his girlfriend Maria, whose family is concerned about his lack of income.

Thabang stands a good chance of achieving his dream with the help of the Palabora Foundation. He can register for a six-month course in Carpentry at the Foundation’s Skills Development department. With the support of his family he can afford the minimal course fees that the Foundation charges to ensure that the trainees are committed to learning.

Once he has learnt the skills he needs with the help of qualified trainers and assessors, Thabang can take the optional business development training course to get him started on the road to entrepreneurial success. He can then obtain further training and mentoring from the Business Development team at the foundation to help sustain and grow his business. In five years’ time, Thabang could start employing other people from his area.

OUR HIV/AIDS POLICY

The Palabora Foundation is invested in the health of people living in and around Phalaborwa. We help more than 1000 people per month from all communities in the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality to access health services.

Phalaborwa, with an estimated population of 150 000, has close to 9066 people that are on ARVs. This is only a fraction of people living with HIV and who have not started treatment. Given the burden of HIV in RSA and the fact that Phalaborwa is a mining area with many migrant labours, the number of clients on ARVs is too small. Nobody can prosper economically unless their primary health care needs are taken care of, which is why the Palabora Foundation is invested in the health of people living in and around Phalaborwa. In fact, the Palabora Foundation supports an average of 1300 people per month from all communities in the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality to access health services. Our flagship programs are:
Outreach services at schools and TVET colleges
Household visitsCondom distribution
Youth dialogue

HIV remains a key global public health issue and in South Africa about 7 million people are living with the virus. Phalaborwa, with an estimated population of 150 000, has close to 9066 people that are on ARVs. This is only a fraction of people living with HIV and who are not yet on treatment. Our intended outcome is to reduce the local rate of infection by aligning ourselves with the newly diversified Five Year Government Strategy for HIV and AIDs commencing in 2017.

OUR INTERGRATED BRAND MARKETING PLAN

The Palabora Foundation’s business model is its system of transforming inputs, through its activities, into outputs and outcomes that aim to fulfil the organisation’s strategic purposes and create value over the short, medium and long term. Primarily, it has done this by working with people through business development, skills development, education and community health programmes. In doing so, we fulfill our strategic purpose to enable economic and community development and create value and prosperity within the areas we operate by developing human capital.

Long-term value generation, or true prosperity as articulated in our mission, requires a market for the skills provided. As a result, we continue to shy away from addressing classically perceived business and community needs to delivering relevant, demand-based programmes, cognisant of the social and business environment we operate in, and linked to national imperatives.

In addition, to continue to fulfil our mission, we realise the strategic imperative towards sustainability means changing how we enable economic and community development. It also means registering a profit-making business to sustain the Foundation’s work and decrease our reliance on returns from invested assets in order to keep serving our community.
